Mass Shootings May Be a Daily Event If Gun Violence Is Not Curtailed – Letang

The general secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang, has expressed concern that mass shootings may become a daily event in Dominica if gun violence is not curtailed. Letang lamented that the frequent incidents of shooting deaths are getting very worrisome and that the government must act fast to arrest the rising trend.

According to the police, almost 10 shooting deaths have occurred in Dominica in the first seven months of this year, with some of the cases resolved and sentences imposed in the law courts. But Letang said it is not enough to talk about peace or pray for peace when there is no proactive steps to stop gun violence in the country; he added that the government needs to stop illegal gun inflow into the country and detract youths from gun involvement.

Youth advocate, entrepreneur and coach, Jordan Luke, said youths empowerment will go a long way at solving the problem of gun violence on the island. He noted that the government must develop a new approach to get people to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue and problem-solving solutions.

Pan-Africanist McClean Williams revealed that rising social problems such as joblessness, family breakups, loss of loved ones, poverty, and government neglect are responsible for the aggression that youths display in the country. He said the government must re-engineer the society to favour the youths in terms of employment, social security, and welfare infrastructure to eliminate the menace of gun violence in Dominica.
