Melissa Poponne-Skerrit Donates Free Laptops to 91 Students in Roseau Central

The parliamentary representative for the Roseau Central constituency, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, has donated brand-new laptops to 91 students in the constituency. The beneficiaries were 61 high school students and 30 college students who lacked a personal computer for their educational endeavours. The laptops were presented to parents and students on Thursday at the Windsor Park Stadium.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant change in the educational systems of most countries, students now utilize laptops and smartphones as well as other connected devices for virtual learning purposes. Many parents are however too poor to procure these digital devices for their children, making the kids to lag behind in online studies while their better-off counterparts have advanced far ahead.

Melisa Skerrit said this disparity in access to online education is what made her to step in by providing free laptops to indigent students.

The Ministry of Education has been able to make immediate and important changes, such as providing online classes to ensure that our children do not fall behind in the educational development. However, the stark reality of inadequate technological devices in the hands of some of our children creates a challenge. So with the support of our political leader and the Labour Party, we decided to close the divide by sourcing laptops for children in Roseau central constituency.

The Roseau Central constituency MP urged the beneficiaries to take proper care of the laptops and to utilize them for academic research and virtual schoolworks. She also encouraged parents to attend PTA meetings, know their children’s teachers, and watch over their homework to ensure that the students obtain the best from their academic pursuits.   “It is my hope that these devices will have a positive impact on social achievements, for every one of you and in doing so will lead to an improved society,” Poponne-Skerrit stated. “Use it in a positive way, for your schoolwork, to do research, to watch educational videos on youtube and to learn a new skill or two.”
