Minister of National Security Condemns Murder of Tricia Wiltshire in Stockfarm

Minister of National Security and Home Affairs, Rayburn Blackmoore, has condemned the January 24 murder of Tricia Wiltshire, 30, in her Stockfarm home. Wiltshire, 30, originally from Castle Bruce, was found murdered and lying in her pool of blood in the evening of her murder. While tasking members of the public to help the police bring the perpetrators to book, Blackmoore assured that the police will leave no stones unturned in prosecuting her killers.

Describing the killing as “brutal and vicious”, Blackmoore urged people to resolve their differences with dialogue instead of resorting to violence and crimes.

We certainly need to be more tolerant of each other; and as we emerge as a country, we must find better ways in resolving conflicts instead of resorting into acts of violence. “When incidents like this one occur, each one of us should do some reflection and come to the realization that there is a need for a gentler and kinder nation.

Assuring the public of a stricter punishment for the perpetrators, the national security minister recalled that the Bail Act which was passed by parliament in recent weeks makes it harder for offenders charged with crime to be released on bail. He added that a societal response to the spate of crimes is critical to resolving them instead of relying on the government alone.

Meanwhile, Honourable Danny Lugay, parliamentary representative of Roseau North Constituency where the crime was committed blamed the government for youths’ restiveness and violence across Dominica. He said factors such as decline in family values, unwholesome government policies, massive unemployment, fewer youths and sports clubs, as well as abandonment of the youths in policymaking are responsible for the rising incidents of murder and related crimes in the country.

A reversal of these exceedingly worrisome trends is needed urgently if we are to stem the tide of despondency that now grips our nation’s youth. For these and other reasons a call also goes out for the convening of a National Consultation on Crime aimed at researching and addressing these frightening and decaying criminal behaviors in our society.
