The Ministry of Agriculture has expressed satisfaction with the abundance of fresh and nutritious food in Dominica. Ministry officials credit the food abundance to the efforts of the government to provide seeds and seedlings for backyard farming to people. Just last month, over 800 families were provided with viable seedlings for backyard and commercial farming across the island.
Project coordinator at the division of agriculture, Dr. Almario Casimir, noted that the abundance of food and the wide acceptance of the backyard farming project is an invitation for the government to do more to ensure food security for all people during and beyond the COVID-19 period.
It now behoves the agro-processing industry to process to extra food supplies to prevent damage, and for boost export, Casimir said. He noted that it is important for farmers and industry operators to store food for domestic consumption, export, and security against the approaching hurricane season.
It augurs the opportunity for export and for agro-processing, and this with regards to the upcoming hurricane season is of significance…to the availability of food. The concern for the Ministry of Agriculture is really and truly the ability to actually have adequate supply of food storage in place, because that is of concern.
