Ministry of Education Organizes Workshop Training For Building Contractors

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources is organizing a capacity building workshop for contractors. The two-week program will be held at the Public Service Union Building and tagged “Best Practices in Construction for Small Contractors.”

The event is sponsored by the Canadian government through the Caribbean Development Bank. The program is organized as part of the Dominica Climate Resilience and Restoration Project. More than 60 small contractors and local suppliers have registered to undergo the extensive training program.

Permanent Secretary in the education ministry, Chandler Hyacinth, urged participants to take advantage of the capacity building program to strengthen their skills for constructing housing that can stand up to any natural disasters. Furthermore, Hyacinth told participants to hone their skills in building repair and renovation for total structural restoration.

The training obtained at the workshop is also aimed at enabling local construction suppliers to supply only quality materials suitable for climate resilience in the face of environmental upheavals. To this end, suppliers will be guided on stocking up supply inventories that will promote material endurance in the construction industry.

Organizers will be employing various techniques to training participants during the event. Apart from the intensive workshops, trainees will also have access to online resources and hands-on training at construction sites.

Aside the ongoing workshop for building contractors and material suppliers, the Dominica Climate Resilience and Restoration Project also includes rebuilding four schools and providing learning materials to a fifth. The school requiring education resources is the Salisbury Primary School and the four to be reconstructed are –

  • Grand Bay
  • Morne Jaune
  • Delices, and
  • WS Stevens

The workshop was facilitated by Greenville Phillips of Walbrent College, a construction institution registered with the Barbados Accreditation Council to provide certifications to specialized construction personnel.
