Senator Monelle Williams Jno-Baptiste condemned PM Skerrit for questioning the qualifications of UWP leader Lennox Linton to become Dominica’s new prime minister. Senator Baptiste said Skerrit is only doing that to shift attention from the unaccounted $1 billion passport sales revenue Linton has been asking about for weeks. Baptiste equated Skerrit’s stance on Linton as character assassination, saying Linton has the best interests of the people of Dominica at heart.
“I have seen this gentleman go around in Dominica, across the length and breadth of this country,” Williams-Jno Baptiste testified. “I have seen him interacting with people…with older people. How can you not say that he cares? How can a man who sat down at our strategic meetings and say, ‘Guys, $300 is not enough because bills are much and the cost of living has increased; and so $300 for people who are in their twilight years is not enough and we need to increase this to $500.’ How can this man not care about the elderly of Dominica, and the young people? He continues to champion the cause for increase in basic wages.”
Baptiste said it is bad enough that the DLP comes up with blatant lies to assassinate the character of Linton, but going further to claim he has no high school certificate is pushing it too far. A UWP candidate for the St. Joseph constituency, Baptiste blamed DLP supporters in Marigot for allowing Linton, which is one of them, to be maligned by the prime minister.
“This is your son of the soil,” Baptiste told the people of Marigot. “You should not have allowed the leaders of the DLP to stand up in Marigot and assassinate yours like this. You have to condemn that sort of behaviour. And for me, the people of Marigot has to reject the DLP candidate, not for any other reason, but because he stood and listened to that nonsense without stopping it. He knows Lennox; he knows how Lennox has championed the cause for the betterment of Marigot. I will not sit here and allow the Labour Party and their cohorts to assassinate my leader in the person of Linton Lennox.”
