Former UWP politician Monelle Williams-Jno Baptiste and UWP Senator Francisca Joseph have raised their voices for the plight of women and vulnerable families in Dominica. Both members of Women of Workers (WOW), Baptiste and Joseph decried the situation where women are exploited politically and domestically as well as the situation where children suffer untold hardships because of delinquent parents.
Baptiste stated that the personal dignity of women cannot be negotiated and that men as well as politicians should appreciate the roles of women at home and at the political front. She said that it is unfortunate that politicians take advantage of women after providing them with monetary and housing assistance, noting that this situation of exploitative and should be frown at.
She encouraged women to be their sister’s keeper by empowering othe women in disadvantaged positions. Baptiste said there is no way women can reach the peak of their community and national potentials if women that are already up the ladder fail to reach down to pull those at the bottom of the ladder up the rungs.
In a related move, Francisca “Sica” Joseph stated that the justice system should be reviewed to ensure that delinquent parents continue to support their children in all ways necessary until they reach maturity. The senator made it clear that broken homes and careless parents are the bane of youth restiveness in the country. She added that children who are ignored by parents and the community stand the risk of becoming violent, bitter, and vengeful agains the society that produced them.
