Morning Star Preschool embarked on public awareness to stop bullying. The school principal, Georgette Deravariere, said the school carried out their awareness by setting up a large signboard condemning bullying at the lower Stockfarm junction where all parents and students can read it. The signboard was designed by R&R Media and personally sponsored by the school management and teachers in collaboration with the PTA.
The main message on the signboard reads: “Don’t Bully…Be a Friend. It’s Never Too Late…To Make a Change!”
“As principal and a mother I brought up this idea to my staff: why not put the message out for all to read rather than we keep it within the school walls,” said Deravariere.
The preschool principal urged all bullies to change their behaviours towards weak students, and she also pleaded with the members of the public to watch out for their children to ensure they do not bully others or being bullied.
“We ask for the public’s help to aid those who are weak and be brave for those who are afraid – stop the bullying, it really hurts,” she stated.
The teachers in the preschool and other helpers personally erected the signboard at a where it could be seen without effort, with many of them saying bullying is a universal problem in schools and all hands must be on deck to stop it. They noted that victims of bullying suffer physical abuse as well as mental and emotional trauma when the bully sustains the attack over a period of time. Unfortunately, most students who are bullied in school do not speak up or report to parents or teachers, fearing the aggression will escalate.
The Ministry of Education tagged October 7 as Bullying Prevention Day among preschools through the early childhood programme. With the Morning Star Preschool embarking on public awareness against school bullying, it is hoped that other schools will take the cue and actively stop instances of bullying in their various schools.
