Mother of Boy Mugged In Antigua May Take the Antiguan Government to Court
Ordiel Furlong, the mother of the Dominican teenager who was mugged and left for dead at Antigua and Barbuda may take the Antiguan government to court over the deadly assault. Her son, Jahhym Azoo, was attacked by some boys with his jaw and nose severely broken and his entire bottom teeth knocked out. He was bleeding inside his brain and a team of doctors was flown in to operate on him.
Furlong said the Antiguan government has failed to arrest and prosecute the five boys allegedly involved in nearly beating her son to death. She is instituting legal action against the Attorney General of Antigua and Barbuda, Steadroy Benjamin, and Commissioner of Police, Atlee Rodney, a Dominican.
The mother who almost went berserk and nearly suffered hysteria and depression over the incident said the Antiguan authorities have not done enough to find and prosecute three boys who are currently at large following the arrest of two. The two arrested by the police have been charged with assault with intent to commit murder, with the authorities saying they are not certain anymore if five boys were actually involved in the attack on Azoo.
Furlong said this cannot be true and that the authorities are possibly shielding the three remaining boys from justice. Although Azoo is out of danger and recuperating at home in Dominica, his mother insists justice must be served and her son’s assailants brought to book. She accused the Antiguan government of treating the matter with kids’ gloves, saying her family suffered untold hardships on account of the incident.
She said her family were left in debt over Azoo’s medical treatment and called on all well-meaning Dominicans to come to her rescue. She said if it were not for the timely intervention of goodwishers and the medical team at St. Johns hospital in Antigua, her son would have died. Azoo’s attackers assailed him on a lonely night on his way from work and stole his Adidas sneakers and smartphone.
