National Consultation Sheds Light on Sustainable Land Management Efforts in Dominica
The Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) convened a national consultation on June 28, focused on fortifying the resilience of Dominica’s agricultural lands and forests. Orchestrated under the auspices of the Inter American Institute for Cooperation and Agriculture (IICA) and PISLM, the consultation marked a critical point in the Project Sustainable Land Management in Dominica.
National Project Coordinator of PISLM, Mr. Euan James, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the project thus far, specifically the positive impact on the island’s farmers. He stated, “We are here today to validate outputs from important projects that have been executed by the PISLM. We take pride at the office in ensuring that the people of Dominica, especially our farmers, can benefit wholesomely from these projects.”
The IICA’s role in the project was particularly highlighted by James, with him acknowledging, “IICA has done well thus far and ensured that the farmers have benefited by providing information and manuals, and we are in the process of executing SLM approaches on farms.”
Regarding the ongoing SLM practices, James pointed out the ongoing implementation of several measures aimed at protecting farmlands and ensuring a secure farming future on the island. “We are doing storm drains, counter drains, and other such approaches to protect the farmlands, protect the soil and ensure that we have a good farming future in this beautiful island,” he explained.
Technical Specialist of IICA, Mr. Kent Coipel, outlined that comprehensive assessments were undertaken on various farms as part of the project. Despite the project’s limitations, Coipel affirmed it provided a crucial basis for determining the farming community’s priorities, enabling farmers to progress incrementally.
The Project Sustainable Land Management in Dominica, funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the United Nations Environmental Program, saw a successful collaboration with IICA and PISLM until June 30, 2023.
