National Security Initiative, Dominica’s Progress in Curbing Illegal Firearms and the Path Ahead

In a significant move to combat the menace of illegal firearms and associated criminal activities, National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore has disclosed the surrender of two illegal firearms to the police during the ‘Gun and Ammunition Amnesty’ from October 1 to 31, 2023.

Blackmoore emphasized the importance of the initiative, acknowledging the small number but highlighting that these surrendered firearms are now off the streets, reducing the potential for criminal use. He encouraged those still hesitant to surrender their illegal or unregistered firearms to approach trusted figures like priests, pastors, or attorneys if they are uncomfortable dealing directly with the police.

Notably, Blackmoore announced an extension of the ‘Gun and Ammunition Amnesty’ program until December 1, 2023, demonstrating the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal firearms. He stressed that, following the program’s conclusion, there would be swift parliamentary action to amend the ‘Firearms Act,’ with severe consequences for those found with illegal firearms or ammunition.

The Minister underscored the collaborative nature of the fight against illegal firearms, citing past efforts to enhance police capabilities and legislative changes imposing stricter penalties. He highlighted that, while remaining vigilant, the government is exploring innovative strategies to deter the use of illegal firearms and ensure public safety.
