The National Cooperative Credit Union (NCCU) will be sponsoring 16 students to secondary school on scholarship. The credit union said they spend about $73,000 annually to sponsor deserving students to school. The scholarship letters were presented to the students and their parents at the Public Service Union Building during NCCU’s 9th annual scholarship ceremony.
NCCU’s CEO, Aylmer Irish, encouraged the recipients to make the best use of the scholarships, adding it was made possible through the dedication of NCCU’s staffs and members. She tasked them to study hard so as to make their parents and their communities as well as the donors who funded the programme proud and happy. She said the annual programme is to ensure that most deserving students are able to acquire quality education.
NCCU’s President, Josephine Dublin, congratulated the recipients on the scholarship awards, saying it will bring positive changes to individual lives, families and entire communities.
“Your journey in pursuit of a secondary education has just begun,” Dublin told the students. “Make the right choices; engage in wholesome activities; cast aside all distractions and nurture within you a grateful heart and always remain on the path that you have chosen. We encourage you to do your best; set goals for yourself and hold yourself accountable for ensuring that these goals are achieved.”
Fifteen of the recipients qualified because their parents could not afford secondary school education for them, and one qualified solely on academic merits. One parent expressed the scholarship for her daughter is the best birthday gift she could receive since she got the call informing her of the scholarship on her birthday.
