New Enhancements Planned for Bioche, Dublanc, and Other Fishing Sites
Efforts to revitalize Dominica’s fishing sector are gaining momentum as work begins on multiple fishing landing sites across the island. The initiative is part of the Dominica Emergency Agricultural Livelihoods and Climate Resilience Project (DEALCRP), focusing on rehabilitating essential infrastructure and providing better facilities for fisherfolk and vendors.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, Jullan Defoe, highlighted the ongoing progress during a recent press conference. He emphasized the scope of the project, which includes significant enhancements at Bioche, Dublanc, and other key locations. Rehabilitation work in these areas encompasses upgrades to boat buildings, office spaces, and vending shelters.
Defoe noted that the interventions span several communities, starting along the west coast, from Bioche and Dublanc to Mahaut, Fond Cole, and Roseau South, extending to Scotts Head. On the eastern side, upgrades are planned for San Sauveur and Stowe. He explained that each site will see tailored improvements, including slipways, food safety systems, and structural enhancements.
For example, in Newtown, the project will involve augmenting the existing infrastructure with a sheltered vending area to ensure both vendors and customers enjoy a more convenient and comfortable environment. In Fond Cole, upgrades aim to enhance the selling culture while improving the overall customer experience.
The fisheries sector suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Maria, with over 70 percent of its assets, including boats and engines, lost. Defoe emphasized that these rehabilitation efforts are crucial for rebuilding critical infrastructure and supporting the livelihoods of those reliant on the fishing industry.
Work on some of the projects has already started, while others are set to begin by the end of January. These enhancements mark a significant step toward revitalizing Dominica’s fisheries sector and fostering sustainable economic growth.
