New Garbage Trucks and Repairs Set to Enhance Waste Services in Dominica

Efforts to enhance Dominica’s solid waste management services are gaining momentum, with plans for new trucks and repairs to the current fleet. The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) General Manager, Florian Mitchell, highlighted these initiatives in response to public concerns about inefficiencies in garbage collection.

Currently, the corporation operates with just two functional compactor trucks and three tipper trucks, falling short of the ten trucks needed per zone to maintain daily collections. Mitchell confirmed that repairs on two to three additional vehicles are expected within the next three weeks, supported by funding from the Ministry of Finance. Parts for these repairs have already been ordered to expedite the process.

Adding to the improvements, new trucks promised by the Prime Minister are expected to arrive soon. These vehicles, numbering between six and ten, will significantly enhance the corporation’s capacity to manage waste island-wide.

Community involvement remains a key focus for the DSWMC. Mitchell emphasized the importance of public education on reducing and separating waste to achieve long-term sustainability. Collaboration between the corporation and citizens is essential to creating a cleaner and more efficient waste management system for Dominica.

As the DSWMC moves forward with these initiatives, residents can anticipate improved garbage collection services in the coming weeks, marking a step toward a more sustainable approach to waste management on the island.
