New Healthcare Centre in Bellevue Chopin Named After Nurse Maria Moise
A new health and wellness centre in Bellevue Chopin has been named after a seasoned nurse and midwife, Maria Moise. Commissioned on March 3, the new community healthcare facility was built to cater to the medical needs of the people but named to honour the contributions of Moise to nursing and midwifery in the Bellevue Chopin.
The Maria Moise Health and Wellness Centre was constructed by MMCE using CBI funds. It is one of the 12 new wellness centres being constructed across the country by the Skerrit-led DLP administration. The Maria Moise centre has two clinics, a pharmacy, a residence for medical personnel, offices for doctors and nurses, as well as two examination rooms besides other facilities.
PM Roosevelt Skerrit, Health Minister Irving McIntyre, and parliamentary representative for Petite Savanne Constituency, Kenneth Darroux, all credited Nurse Maria Moise for her selfless service for many decades and agreed that naming the new health centre after her is justified. The retired nurse during her service years reportedly serviced the local people in Petite Savanne, Bagatelle, Grand Bay, Tete Morne and Bellevue Chopin.
Moise was reported to rise in the middle of the night when summoned for midwifery services and with the aid of torchlight, reach women in need. She helped with home deliveries and assisted with ante-partum or post-partum haemorrhage with absolute success. Although she retired from active nursing service in 2016, Moise still works through contractual employment. After the passage of Tropical Storm Erika in 2015, the nurse was said to have worked very hard to help women across the country.
“Today is another great day for you the people of Bellevue Chopin,” Dr. McIntyre. “This is all part of the bigger picture that the Ministry for Health and the Government of Dominica has for health as regards to decentralizing healthcare, making health available to everyone, everywhere.”
