DLP gives new houses to 66 Castle Bruce residents; names Portsmouth housing after Rosie Douglas. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has handed the keys to new houses to 61 families in Castle Bruce. Skerrit, who is also the Minister for Housing, said the housing project was made possible by the Citizenship by Investment programme.
He noted that while it is not the direct responsibility of the government to build houses for people, the DLP administration is committed to the project because of their love for poor Dominicans.
“While it is not a direct responsibility of the government to give anyone a home…this party…has always recognized that we have an obligation as Christians to look after those who are unable to look after themselves,” Skerrit said.
Parliamentary representative for the Castle Bruce constituency, Johnson Drigo, applauded the government for the good gesture, saying the DLP has helped people to own new and better homes after the 2017 devastation of Hurricane Maria.
Meanwhile, Skerrit disclosed that the new housing scheme in Georgetown, Portsmouth, will be named after former parliamentarian and Prime Minister Rosie Douglas. Sixty-eight families were given new homes in Georgetown earlier this week and 44 more will obtain theirs in the next few weeks. Skerrit said it is necessary to name the housing area after the late Douglas because of his contribution to national development.
“We have decided to name this housing development in honour of our late Parl Rep [Parliamentary Representative] and Prime Minister Rosie Douglas,” he revealed. “This development will be known as the Rosie Douglas Housing Development.”
By naming the housing after Douglas, Skerrit urged the new residents to live in peace and love with neighbours, keep the flowers planted and blossoming, as well as keep the entire place clean and tidy in honour of the person of whom the place is named.
“If you are going to name the place after Rosie who has been good to so many of us in Dominica; one, you have to maintain the place clean; two, you have to keep the flowers planted; and three, no noise among neighbours. It’s only peace and love,” he advised.
