New UWP’s Candidate for Salybia, Anette Thomas Outlines Plans for Constituency
United Workers Party’s Salybia replacement for Dr. Worrel Sanford, Nurse Annette Thomas Sanford, has outlined a comprehensive list of developmental plans for her would-be constituency. Sanford’s husband, Senator Claudius Sanford, contested two past elections on a UWP ticket. According to the former Kalinago Chief contender, she is running on the UWP Team Dominica ticket because the party has the best plans and team of individuals best equipped to grow the wealth of the Kalinago people beyond Salybia constituency.
Sanford, who plans to harness grassroots movement to bring developmental transformations to Salybia, said one of the first things she will do on being elected is providing quality healthcare facility for the elderly and physically challenged individuals.
“One of my first missions, if elected, is to construct a care facility for the elderly and physically challenged which will also serve residents from the east, providing them with 24-hour care,” Sanford said.
One of the main motivations for contesting for the position, according to her, is to provide better political leadership for the progressive people of Antrizzle and the Kalinago. “I sincerely believe that I am capable of providing this visionary leadership,” she told the people at a press conference after her launching.
But that is not all. Thomas Sanford said the declining economic opportunities, deficit in social activities, lack of sporting events, poor farming systems, and inadequate healthcare, are part of the reasons she is running for the office. To this end, she is developing an extensive plan of development concomittant with those of the United Nations Declaration on the rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the Outcome Document of the World Conference on Indigenous People.
Sanford, in compliance with this economic blueprint for the development of the Kalinago peoples, aims to –
- Enhance economic and development initiatives
- Make Salybia a model tourism destination with guest houses
- Establish sustainable fisheries with agricultural processing facilities
- Revitalize agriculture using climate-smart technology that enhances multi-crop production
- Support creative energies in music, performing arts, cuisine knowledge, and cultural pursuits
- Ensure that the Kalinago Chief becomes a member of parliament
- Creation of youth centers for social recreation and out-of-school learning
- Extend social infrastructure and healthcare system to every household
Sanford said her developmental plans is beyond herself, but are about everyone and the entire constituency.
“From the framework that I have laid out, you can see that this campaign can’t only be about me; it must be about us,” she stated. “It should be about what we, in the Salybia Constituency, can do together. In this regard, my team and I shall be visiting every home and we will meet with every resident of the Salybia Constituency.”
Considering that she is passionate about having the Kalinago Chief appointed into parliament, Sanford said this move will ensure better representation for the needs and concerns of the Kalinago peoples.
“I support this wholeheartedly because this initiative will give us another voice in parliament,” Sanford revealed. “The next Kalinago Chief will not be a guest of anyone in the parliament of Dominica, she or he will speak on behalf of the Kalinago people as a member of parliament under a UWP government.”
