New UWP’s Political Leader, Francisca Joseph, Says It’s a New Dawn for Women
The new political leader for the United Workers Party (UWP), Francisca Joseph, said it is a new dawn for women in Dominica. The former Deputy Political Leader who became the interim Political Leader following the resignation of Senator Lennox Linton on September 30 said her emergence as a woman to potentially lead the UWP signals a new turn for women in the country.
It is a good day for women in Dominica. You know in the old Dominican sphere that women tend to be scared of getting into the political realm. You have to be strong. I am speaking for young women and for girls that you too can stand up and you too can have the opportunity to be what you want to be in spite of the circumstances and you can stand strong.

Joseph further said she cannot make any substantive statements regarding the resignation of Linton and her emergence as the interim leader of the UWP. She said she will be free to talk about these things after the UWP delegates’ conference which tentatively comes up on November. She said the opposition party remains committed to fighting poverty and injustice in Dominica despite all the odds.
When Mr. Linton resigned, I obviously became the interim leader and I cannot comment yet on anything further. We have a delegate’s conference coming up and I wait. We await the delegates’ conference and see what transpires and emerges and we continue to do the work because we are a united party and we will fight for the cause of freeing our country from poverty and unemployment.

Joseph emphasized that even though Linton is no more the political leader of the UWP, he remains a prominent leader of the party nonetheless. She credited his dogged fight for freedom and social justice in Dominica, adding that the party leadership remains dedicated to supporting him in everything he does.
The UWP commends Linton and continues to stand with him. This is a leader that you want to emulate; this is somebody that is so passionate that you cannot help but like his passion about people and about country, not for self. Because if it was for self, I think he would have left the party a long time ago.
