No Formal Notice Issued to Dominica Regarding U.S. Visa Restrictions

The United States has denied reports of an impending travel ban affecting Dominica and other Caribbean nations, stating that no such list exists or is under consideration by the Trump administration.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce sought to clarify the matter following widespread reports that 43 countries had been categorized into groups under a proposal that could limit or suspend visa access if governments failed to address certain security concerns.

Well, first of all, there is no list. What people have been looking at over the last several days is not a list that exists here and is being acted upon. There is a review, as we know through the president’s executive order, to look at what will help keep America safer when dealing with the issue of visas and who’s allowed into the country.

The reports, first published by The New York Times and later corroborated by Reuters, suggested that US diplomatic and security officials had drafted a memo outlining potential restrictions based on national security deficiencies.

Earlier reports had indicated that Dominica was among 26 countries placed in a “yellow” category, purportedly required to rectify specific security deficiencies within 60 days to avoid partial visa suspensions. These reports caused concern among Caribbean nations, prompting leaders to seek clarification from U.S. officials.

In response to these reports, the government of Dominica instructed its Ambassador to the United States to make the necessary inquiries seeking clarification. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit emphasized the strong and valued relationship between Dominica and the United States.

As of now, no official communication has been issued by the U.S. government to Dominica regarding any impending visa restrictions. The State Department’s clarification aims to dispel the concerns arising from the earlier reports.

It is important to note that while the U.S. is conducting a review to enhance national security in visa processes, no specific countries have been publicly identified as targets for new travel restrictions. Dominica continues to maintain diplomatic engagement with U.S. authorities to ensure compliance with international security standards and to preserve the mobility rights of its citizens.
