NYCD to Recognize 20 Outstanding Youths at NY Awards on Sept 26

The National Youth Council of Dominica (NYCD) has set September 26 to recognize 20 outstanding youths who have contributed to the development of the country in various sectors. Tagged the “National Youths Awards” with the theme “Celebrating the Vision,” nomination for the event remains open till August 17.

First Vice President of the NYCD and Chairman of the awards committee, Phael Lander, said Dominican youths aged 16-35 will be celebrated for what they have done to develop the country. He said the awards which launched in March will serve to honour youths and inspire them to do more for their communities and the nation as a whole.

NYCD President, Ashma McDougall, said two award categories will be added to the list. These are the Outstanding Youth in Diaspora Award and the JCI Dominica Fadelle Yankey Excellence in Leadership Award. She noted that while many Dominican youths are outside the shores of the country, they remain outstanding in developing their countries of residence to the glory of their fatherland.

McDougall urged people to nominate distinctive youths who can be honoured with the respective awards through the NYCD social media platforms. A panel of seven judges has been scrambled to oversee the nominations and review nominee qualifications for possible inclusion into the awards. This year’s event will hold at Emerald Movies Theatre, but the last time it held was five years ago on June 24, 2017, at the Dominica State College (DSC).

In a related development, the National Cultural Council in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Community Development awarded the 2022 Golden Drum Award to six recipients and two groups virtually on Saturday, August 6.

Chief Cultural Office Earlson Mathew listed the awardees as Vincent Cyril “Elf” Henderson, Delia Cuffy-Weekes, Atherton Martin, Stardom Calypso Tent, Vanessa Lissa Winston, Christopher Jefferson Warrington, Cecil “Checker” Burnette, and TK International. Posthumous awards were also given to Jacinta David and Earl Etienne, while special recognition awards were extended to Ibrahim Brohim, Juanita Jules, Chad Zamore, and Ronnie Magloire.
