Ob-Gyn Expert Assures Pregnant Women on COVID-19, HIV/AIDS Transmissions

Dr. Diane Robinson Armour, an obstetrician and gynecologist, has assured pregnant women that there is little to fear from COVID-19 if they are not exposed to the disease. The ob-gyn specialist made it clear that a pregnant woman infected with COVID-19 cannot transmit the virus to her unborn child, except of course through unsanitary and unhygienic practices.

Dr. Armour advised all pregnant women to attend antenatal care at reputable healthcare facilities such as the one in the Roseau Health District if they have social distancing guidelines in place. She assured expectant mothers that there are ob-gyn specialists who are able to take care of them in Dominica and that they are in every community across the island.

“To be honest with you, Dominica has an extremely well setup primary healthcare system; and that’s very impressive,” she said. “All our communities are very well taken care of in terms of having nurses, midwives, pediatric nurses…we have a good contingent of specialties represented at the communities. Definitely, the nurses and doctors out there can take care of the pregnant women at the community level.”

Coordinator of the National HIV/AIDS Response Unit, Lester Guye, in a related development made it clear that HIV/AIDS victims are not at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 when compared with other individuals who have compromised medical conditions.
