The Minister of Education, Octavia Alfred, said COVID-19 brought out the best in the education ministry. She said the management team at the ministry went to extra miles to ensure that all students acquire qualitative education while staying at home during the coronavirus lockdown.
She said the ministry explored online channels to serve the education needs of students across the island, and credited ministry officials for their efforts. She also identified key ministry officials and even those at the bottom of the rung for doing all in their capability to ensure that “no child was left behind” in accessing quality online education.
Alfred thanked curriculum officers, education officers, IT Personnel, communication officers, CXC Registrar, school counsellors, special education officers, earlier childhood education officers, drivers, janitors, security, and social enablers for their cooperation to make the education ministry achieve its academic mandate for all students.
The education minister noted that the coronavirus crisis is global and that Dominica has shown resilience much more than other nations in overcoming the pandemic. She mentioned the fact that the Skerrit-led administration has facilitated the return of 55 Dominican students studying abroad back to the island, and that the government is still working to bring back other international students willing to return home to the country.
She urged people everywhere to adhere to health protocols laid down by the Ministry of Health in order to stop the spread of COVID-19, adding that Dominica will emerge a conqueror over the pandemic.
“Home is truly where the heart belongs, there is no place like home,” she said. “We must continue to be grateful and let us not frustrate the Grace of God by being careless in observing guidelines by the Ministry of Health,” she said, adding, “We will overcome, we will conquer…”
