ODM Tips Citizens, Farmers and Fishermen on Alertness, Safety and Precautions

The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) tips citizens, farmers and fishermen on mental alertness, personal safety and environmental precautions during Tropical Storm Dorian. National Disaster Co-ordinator, Fitzroy Pascal, outlined areas of personal safety for residents in coastal areas, and preparedness steps that farmers and fishermen should take to safeguard life and business.

Some of the areas for possible concern during the much-anticipated downpour include –

  • Flash flooding
  • Landslides
  • Gusty winds
  • Choppy seas

People everywhere are therefore advised to fully secure important documents and sensitive items of critical importance to prevent loss and damage. People living in low-lying, coastal and flood-prone areas are advised to move up to higher grounds before the storm starts. And people everywhere are encouraged to clear gutters and drains of debris to allow the free flow of water in case of flooding.

Agricultural farmers should safeguard their crops, storage barns and farming implements from loss. Banana and plantain farmers should prop their plants with stronger stakes to prevent falling in the winds. And greenhouse farmers should secure the coverings, as well as turn off water pumps and clear irrigation lines.

Livestock farmers are equally encouraged to store a week’s supply of animal feeds, water and drugs for their animals. In fact, animals are to be moved to higher grounds, and those tied to stakes should be moved to safer areas or even set loose if possible. Poultry farmers should take all precautions to ensure that their cages and pens are not flooded by clearing gutters and placing sandbags where necessary to protect the birds.

Fishermen are tasked with securing their fishing boats, engines and equipment or even move them to higher grounds where possible. Farmers and fisher-folks are encouraged to take stock of their losses during Storm Dorian and report these to data collectors or Extension Officers after the tropical storm is completely over.
