The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) has issued an urgent advisory to haulers and the public regarding waste management following the closure of the Fond Cole Landfill due to a persistent fire. The landfill, which remains closed as of Monday, April 29, 2024, has prompted significant measures to ensure public safety and minimize inconvenience.
The DSWMC has expressed its regret over the disruptions caused by the fire, especially the impact on nearby communities like Stock Farm and Fond Cole, where residents are likely to experience discomfort from the smoke.
To mitigate health risks, particularly for those with respiratory issues, the Corporation advises using disposable masks and has recommended that residents limit exposure to smoke.
Efforts to control and extinguish the fire are ongoing, with the fire department leading the response in collaboration with key stakeholders including The Dominica Water and Sewerage Company Ltd (DOWASCO) and The Office of Disaster Management (ODM). These organizations have been instrumental in providing essential resources such as excavators, dump trucks, and water trucks, which are currently in use at the site to manage the situation.
In light of the landfill’s closure, the DSWMC is preparing alternative measures for waste disposal to ensure that the public and environmental health are not compromised.
An alternate garbage disposal route is expected to be operational by Tuesday, April 30, 2024, by noon, to facilitate continued waste management services without further disruption to the community.
The Corporation has called for the public’s understanding and cooperation during this challenging time, highlighting the community’s resilience and the collaborative efforts to restore normalcy.
