Opposition Suggests Dislodging DLP Govt, Imposing Sanctions on Skerrit
The opposition coalition believes the DLP can be dislodged from government, and that PM Roosevelt Skerrit can be forced out of office. The political leader of the DFP, Bernard Hurtault, said the power to remove the current administration from office is vested in the people; and a former member of parliament for Salisbury Constituency, Hector John, said the prime minister can be forced to resign if the people would act.
According to Hurtault, the current administration can be removed if the Dominican population would comprehend electoral reforms, campaign legislation and regulations, and engage in debates that underscore the necessity of having a new government in place. He called on Dominicans to exercise concerted efforts and dedication at understanding and implementing legislative changes that will usher in a new government that is truly representative of the people.
In his submission, Hector John said necessary sanctions should be imposed on PM Skerrit to force his hands at implementing electoral reforms within desired timeframes. He emphasized that until the people of Dominica take decisive actions against the DLP administration and the person of the prime minister, the country will remain retarded in terms of economic and social growths compared to other nations in the Caribbean.
The general secretary of the UWP, Nicholas George, condemns the DLP government for their insensitity to the plights of the nation. He stated that the government has failed woefully in meeting the expectations of the electorates, and that the selfish concern of the Skerrit-led government is to remain in power till eternity. He criticized Skerrit for prioritizing the social status of his family and cronies over that of the people that got him into office.
In his own reaction, DFP member Alvin Thomas said the people must contend against the current government to achieve true political freedom. He tasked the people apply open-mindedness and constructive dialogue in tackling the government, clarifying that disagreement with the government does not necessarily mean opposition. He noted that the only way for the country to move forward is via a healthy democratic process that is sustained on diverse viewpoints.
