Over $2m Contract Awarded For Upgrades of Delices and Morne Jaune Schools
A Canadian-funded project under the management of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) is facilitating the rehabilitation of two primary schools in Dominica. According to Education Minister Octavia Alfred, the sum of EC$1,080,572.53 has been set aside to rehabilitate Delices Primary School while the sum of EC$1,058,880.40 was assigned to reconstruct Morne Jaune Primary School.
Located in the south-east of Dominica, both primary schools will undergo general reconstruction and repairs for student classrooms, bathrooms, sick bays, store rooms, staff rooms, principal’s office, cafetaria, computer and science laboratories, library, and kitchenettes among others.
Education Minister Alfred noted that a new building will also be constructed at the Morne Jaune Primary School for the benefits of early childhood students. She said another building extension will also be constructed for future uses of the school. According to her, the construction will be carried out using environmentally resilient materials so that the buildings could be used as hurricane shelters during unfavourable weather conditions.
In a related development, the principal of Wesley High School, Hilarion Akpa, has revealed that all students will be wearing pink in a show of support to the Dominica Cancer Society on Thursday, October 15. The society is celebrating the Cancer Awareness Day and students will demonstrate solidarity with the fight against cancer by wearing pink to school. The overall idea is to impart students with the awareness that cancer is real and early detection is key to total recovery.
