Parking Metres Proposed To Ease Traffic Congestion in Roseau and Portsmouth

Parking metres have been proposed to ease traffic congestions in Roseau and Portsmouth. The government and members of the public have been battling the problems of traffic congestions in the two most populous cities of Dominica, and the police have always had a difficult time managing traffic situations during special events.

It is proposed that parking metres will ease the situation greatly.

Parry Bellot of ParBel Entreprises said installing parking metres in Roseau first and possibly in Portsmouth later will be a giant stride to easing traffic congestion in the cities. He said his firm and other technical entities in Dominica are currently discussing with the government to set up the initiative.

“It’s been getting worse and likely to continue to worsen unless someone or some group tries to deal with the problem,” Bellot said. “I and another consultant came up with the idea to start by introducing parking metres in Roseau.”

The way a parking metre works, motorists will buy time to park their vehicles at limited parking spaces in the capital city. For instance, if a motorist buys parking space for 30 minutes, he must remove his vehicle once his 30 minutes is up so that other motorists can buy time to use the same space for parking.

Bellot said he and other initiators had been planning for the metres for over six months, and that many aspects still need to be sorted out. He revealed that suppliers have been obtained and these will be visiting Roseau and even Portsmouth on feasibility studies before they supply the most appropriate parking metres for use.

He further said special cards will be used to buy parking time and space instead of tokens or coins, and that a large segment of the society has expressed interest in the initiative. He also said the police force, the industry and commerce association, Ocean Caribe and other entities are partners for moving the proposal forward.
