On Friday 24th February, the Climate Resilience Execution Agency for Dominica (CREAD) officially launched its Resilience Mural Campaign. At a simple ceremony on the Dame Mary Eugenia Charles Boulevard, Roseau, there was a grand reveal of the six murals.
The Resilience Mural Campaign is CREAD’s effort to stamp the resilience message firmly on the landscape of Dominica, so we always remember the mission and journey to resiliency by 2030. Speaking at the launch, CREAD’s CEO Francine Baron expressed that “Resilience is everyone’s business”. She added that an enhanced collective consciousness is a critical factor in the achievement of resiliency.
A critical target in the Climate Resilience and Recovery Plan (CRRP) is ensuring that 90% of the population can identify the pillars of resilience and at least one measure undertaken, with specific focus on respect for people, planet and property. To this end, CREAD conceptualised the island-wide mural initiative to leave an impactful and indelible resilience message on the landscape of Dominica as the country continues its journey to becoming the first climate-resilient nation.
This initiative, in collaboration with the Waitukubuli Artists Association (WAA) and CREAD has brought to the table the Association’s most outstanding and talented artists who specialise in mural design and painting. Artists: Sarama Rolle, Ray Francis, Edward Collins, Carol Sorhaindo, Aaron Hamilton and Hilroy Fingal showcased their artistic expression and interpretation of aspect of the CRRP and the theme – Safe Climate…Safe Future…Safe Us…Safe You…#resiliency. These masterpieces are strategically placed
in six locations in the south, north and west of the island. The walls are: NCCU, Pointe Michel; L.A. Dupigny & Co. Ltd, Roseau; Convent Preparatory, Roseau; NCCU, Mahaut; Opposite the Layou Emergency Shelter, St. Joseph and James Store, Portsmouth.
