Petro Caribe Supplies 10,000 Barrels of Petrol for National Reserve – Skerrit

PM Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that 10,000 barrels of gasoline was delivered for the national reserve of Dominica by Petro Caribe. The product was delivered to the Island on Sunday, January 15, and stored in two major facilities across the country. Skerrit also announced that a new price regime for petroleum products has been approved for immediate implementation.

The prime minister said it became necessary to stock excess petrol, kerosine, and diesel in the country to guard against regional scarcity. He noted that the fuel shortage that hit the country in December 2022 will no longer occur in Dominica and that citizens will never experience fuel scarcity ever again.

He explained that Dominica buys about 6,000 barrels of gasoline from Venezuela, but the excess amounts of the products must equally be sourced from other sellers to guard against delivery problems or shortage. And in the case of delivery issues or regional shortage, Dominica can tap into its own stored reserve to meet the needs of consumers. He said the excess amount shipped for national storage will be increased to 20,000 with time.

Skerrit also disclosed that the 10,000 barrels delivered by Petro Caribe were stored temporarily in large storage tanks leased from the Dominica Coconut Products (DCP) Successors Ltd and the rest stored at Petro Caribe facility. He added that the government is looking to construct more storage tanks in Porsmouth so that gasoline national reserve can be in the north and south of the country.

He also announced that a new price regime has been approved for petroleum products from January 16. The price for gasoline is now $14.87 per gallon – a reduction of $1.07; high sulphur diesel is now $15.42 per gallon – a reduction of $1.30; kerosene is now $13.84 per gallon – a reduction of $1.20; and ultra-low sulphur diesel reduced to $16.32 per gallon – a drop of $1.65. The price of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) from 20lb to 100lb cylinders will be reduced by 20-65 cents.
