PM Roosevelt Skerrit Charges Police Recruits to be Shining Examples
PM Roosevelt Skerrit charged police recruits to be shining examples in the country. He charged the 28 new police officers who graduated last week to be hardworking, efficient, and good ambassadors of the country.
One of the main questions the new officers should always ask themselves, according to the prime minister is, “what is going to be our individual and collective contribution” towards making Dominica the safest country in the Caribbean?
Skerrit said the new recruits must demonstrate that they are capable of maintaining law and order despite the challenges that come with the job. He said they must also be trustworthy enough to work in sensitive departments within the police organization.
You will have to ask yourself whether you can be trusted to serve in a sensitive unit in the police force; you will have to ask yourself whether sensitive information can be shared with you… You will want to ask yourself whether you can be assigned to a special unit in the police force.

Skerrit said if the police officers do not discharge their duties the way it should be done, then the country will suffer for their laxity and their families will also be impacted by their actions.
On the issue of salary increase, the prime minister said he will meet with the Police Welfare Association (PWA) and senior police officers as well as other stakeholders to discuss their salary increment. He added however that reclassification is the best way to go towards better remunerations.
“We know there are issues relating to salaries,” Skerrit said. “Though I know you ask for fifteen, fifteen, fifteen but I believe most of us believe that the route to go to addressing the issue of remuneration through the police force is through a reclassification exercise; and this, in our mind, will in a systematic manner address the issue of remuneration.”
