Prime Minister Roosevelt and three other CARICOM leaders will be visiting Guyana on a two-day mission to douse electoral tensions in the northeastern South American republic. The three other delegates include CARICOM chairperson, Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Prime Minister Keith Mitchell of Grenada.
The four CARICOM heads of government will meet with various stakeholders to resolve the country’s disputed March 2 general elections where two parties are claiming victory. The ruling government party and the opposition party are claiming victory at the same time, with an injunction filed in court to prevent the Guyana Electoral Commission (GECOM) from announcing the official results.
The CARICOM delegation will meet with party representatives, as well as with members of the Commonwealth, the Organization of American States (OAS), the European Union, and the Carter Centre who observed the conduct of the general elections with a view to resolving the impasse. Following the intervention, the CARICOM leaders will return back to their various countries on Friday, March 13.
