PM Skerrit Calls for Urgent Action on Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has issued a stark warning about the growing crisis of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in Dominica, calling for urgent action to curb their rise. Speaking at a recent national health forum, Skerrit highlighted the alarming increase in cases of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, warning that these illnesses are placing an unsustainable burden on the healthcare system.

Our people are suffering, and our healthcare infrastructure is being stretched. We must take responsibility as a nation to promote healthier lifestyles and ensure early intervention.

Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica

He pointed to rising healthcare costs and reduced productivity as key economic concerns stemming from the prevalence of NCDs. The Prime Minister urged policymakers to strengthen public health initiatives, promote healthier diets, and encourage physical activity to counteract the impact of these diseases.

Health professionals in Dominica have echoed Skerrit’s concerns, noting that lifestyle factors such as poor dietary habits, high sugar consumption, and sedentary living contribute significantly to the problem. They have called for more vigorous public awareness campaigns, improved access to healthcare, and greater regulation of unhealthy food imports.

As the government prepares to ramp up its efforts, citizens are urged to take personal responsibility for their health and participate in nationwide wellness programs. The Ministry of Health has already indicated that it will roll out new community-based interventions to increase screenings and preventive care.
