PM Skerrit Commends US Treasury Department on OECS CBI Programmes

PM Roosevelt Skerrit has commended the United States Department of Treasury on their stand on the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme run by countries within the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Skerrit said the Treasury Department interfaced with OECS regional leaders on how to perfect the CBI initiative for all concerned.

Regional government leaders met with officials of the US Treasury Department in St. Kitts and Nevis which included the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the department. Also at the meeting was the governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy Antoine; and OECS’s Director-General, Dr. Didacus Jules. There were also top representatives from key state departments in the US.

Skerrit expressed joy for the support of the United States government for the CBI programmes run in the OECS. He also expressed satisfaction with the level of engagements had so far to strengthen and protect the CBI project across the region. He said regional leaders would act on the key recommendations issued by the US government and that everything would be done to fortify the citizenship investment programme.

I’m very grateful to them for the very positive, constructive engagement of all of us who have CBI programmes. There are some areas that they believe that we can strengthen. And this is where some of the recommendations are. And before the end of this week, we’ll certainly indicate where we stand on those recommendations from the US.

Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica

The prime minister equally noted that OECS government leaders met with the newly-elected Secretary General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), Dr. Benedict Okey Oramah, on investment and financing opportunities for regional countries.

He disclosed that Dominica will be joining Afreximbank and even setting up a branch in the OECS soon to facilitate loan access from the African investment bank.
