PM Skerrit Dismisses Reports of Hiring a Foreign Police Chief
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has rejected claims that his administration is considering hiring a foreign police chief to replace Acting Commissioner Davidson Valerie when his tenure concludes later this year. Addressing the matter, Skerrit made it clear that there have been no discussions or decisions regarding such a move.
For now, within the police force, we do have capacity. I believe we can identify someone locally to serve as police chief.

The Prime Minister noted that rather than seeking leadership from outside the country, the government is focused on strengthening internal capabilities. He acknowledged that Dominica’s law enforcement agencies could benefit from technical support and specialized training, particularly for senior officers at the sergeant, inspector, and assistant superintendent levels.
We will be looking at engaging external experts to assist with training, particularly in crime prevention strategies, intelligence analysis, and resource management.

However, he insisted that leadership within the Dominica Police Force should come from within, as there are qualified individuals who can take on the role.
Skerrit also addressed broader concerns regarding crime-fighting efforts, emphasizing the need for law enforcement agencies to improve data analysis and intelligence gathering. He stressed that training and capacity-building initiatives would be prioritized to equip officers with modern crime management techniques.
It’s not just about appointing a police chief; it’s about ensuring that the entire force is better trained and prepared to tackle evolving security challenges.

While dismissing reports about hiring a foreign police chief, Skerrit confirmed that the government is committed to investing in law enforcement reforms, ensuring that officers are well-equipped to manage public safety effectively.
There is no discussion about a foreign police chief, and no decision has been taken on that issue.
