PM Skerrit Pledges Support for Bayfront Vendors

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has underscored his commitment to supporting the Bayfront vendors’ economic survival during a recent press conference. Emphasizing the role of vendors as ambassadors of Dominica’s cultural identity, he assured the nation that his government would take no action threatening the vendors’ means of livelihood.

PM Skerrit revealed an array of measures already taken by his administration to support the vendors. At the forefront is the establishment of a collaborative team comprising vendors, members from the Dominica Airport and Seaport Authority (DASPA), and the Ministry of Tourism. The creation of this team underscores the government’s dedication to inclusive decision-making, ensuring all actions undertaken are representative of the stakeholders’ interests.

During their meeting, the team brainstormed immediate interventions to improve the vendors’ situation. These included the provision of logistical support to vendors in arranging their stalls and tents. As part of this initiative, the government will procure tents that meet the vendors’ specific needs, as voiced by the vendors themselves.

Long-term solutions also form a crucial part of the PM’s plan. He announced that future plans involve the construction of permanent vending structures with adequate facilities. This vision ties into his larger plan for the Bayfront area. In consultation with stakeholders, it was decided that vendors should not monopolize the entire area. Hence, specific sections will be retained for public use, allowing for family outings and socialization.

In an endeavor to enhance the vendors’ representation of Dominica to tourists – often their first contact – PM Skerrit proposed a uniform for the vendors. He revealed that the vendors themselves would contribute to the design process, reinforcing their role as representatives of Dominica.

Lastly, vendors will receive tools to aid the organization and display of their products, including t-shirts, earrings, and other items. This measure aims to bolster the vendors’ operations, ensuring they continue to thrive as an integral part of the local economy and tourism industry.
