PM Skerrit Responds to UK’s Visa Decision and Stresses Dominica’s Due Diligence

Prime Minister Skerrit addressed the recent decision of the United Kingdom to suspend visa-free access for Dominican passport holders. He emphasized that the UK government’s move doesn’t signify a deterioration in bilateral relations but is due to concerns about Dominica’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme.

Dominica has already initiated changes to the CBI structure and will further bolster measures in the coming weeks. PM Skerrit assured the nation of the country’s commitment to showcasing robust due diligence in the vetting process for its CBI programme, emphasizing its multi-layered checks conducted by top-tier agencies in the UK and US.

Dominica has led efforts in the region for regional coordination on CBI programmes, implementing six principles proposed by the US, such as mandatory interviews for applicants aged 16 and older. This displays Dominica’s dedication to international cooperation, ensuring reduced threats from illicit actors.

The funds accrued from Dominica’s CBI have been instrumental in addressing climate change impacts, driving economic growth, and empowering local communities. With potential negative implications on the socio-economic structure of the nations relying on such programmes, the Caribbean is proactive in addressing international concerns.

PM Skerrit stressed that the rigorous inspection during the vetting process makes it nearly impossible for undesirable individuals to bypass the system. He announced plans to involve a European entity to review the entire programme, ensuring it not only adheres to but surpasses international standards.

While the UK’s decision may inconvenience Dominicans traveling to the UK, it doesn’t prohibit their entry. The UK government will simplify the visa application process for Dominicans, accepting online applications and offering on-demand biometric submission services within Dominica.

Reiterating Dominica’s active role in global issues like climate change and alternative energy, PM Skerrit highlighted ongoing investments in housing, healthcare, education, and infrastructural projects linked directly to the CBI programme.

PM Skerrit concluded by expressing his disappointment in the UK’s decision but remained optimistic about Dominica’s resilience and future prospects, promising to overcome this challenge as the nation moves towards a dynamic future.
