PM Skerrit Says People Should Thank Govt for Resurfaced Roads in Roseau
Rather than misinterpreting the government’s intentions in all things, PM Roosevelt Skerrit has tasked Dominicans to look beyond the surface to find positivity in whatever the government does for the people. The prime minister said this in response to people’s comments over the current resurfacing of roads in Roseau City.
Skerrit clarified that the ongoing resurfacing of roads in Kennedy Avenue, Independence Street, and King George V Street is to beautify the city before and after the carnival, and not part of the Roseau Enhancement Project which is billed to resume later this year. He said the resurfacing is just for routine road maintenance which ought to be done from time to time.
“This is routine road maintenance that we do from time to time,” Skerrit said. “When you know that visitors are coming to your home, you do a little more cleaning and sprucing up. That’s what you do as a country. If you know you have a national activity, you would pay a little more attention to details. Instead of just patching the road this week and next week, I gave the direction to just resurface the streets to give us a few months reprieve.”
Skerrit, who is also the Minister of Finance, said it is wrong for people to say the just concluded national carnival inspired the road resurfacing initiative. He said that even if it was the carnival, the roads would be there for perpetual use when the carnival is over. He added that people should learn to appreciate the government for good things done and not criticize every initiative as if it was not executed to benefit Dominicans.
“So, when you see something positive happen, let’s say it’s good and let’s roll,” he said. “If every time we do something positive, there are people who criticize, then where are we taking our country?”
According to him, Great George Street will be the first to be completed, after which Independence Street and King George Street or Kennedy Avenue will follow.
