PM Skerrit to Appoint Four Independent Senators If DLP Wins All 21 Seats
PM Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed that his administration will appoint four independent contenders to parliament if the DLP ends up winning the entire 21 seats during the forthcoming snap election. The DLP leader said that since the UWP, DFP, and APP have chosen to not participate in the December 6 elections, his party will be happy to win the entire seats available in parliament.
“If by their actions, we get all 21 seats, we shall gladly accept all 21 of those seats,” he stated. “We shall not abuse this mandate; we shall govern with respect for law and the rule of law. And indeed if they give us the 21 seats, I shall move with dispatch to have the necessary laws amended to provide for the appointment of four independent senators to the parliament of Dominica.”
Of the four independent candidates to be potentially appointed, Skerrit said one will be appointed by President Charles Savarin, one will be appointed by the private sector, one by the church, and the fourth by the trade union movement. He said this is to ensure that the government has enough members who are both supporters and dissenters to generate a “constructive engagement.”
A coalition of opposition parties has decided to boycott the coming snap elections except electoral reform is established. While Sir Dennis Byron has promised to release the electoral reform in two parts, the opposition condemned the snap elections called by the prime minister as dubious and a ploy to perpetuate himself in office.
