PM Skerrit Vows to Work Hand-In-Hand with New Kalinago Chief Lorenzo Sandford
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has congratulated new Kalinago Chief Lorenzo Sandford as the youngest man to occupy the position. The prime minister who is also the minister of finance vowed to work closely with Skerrit to improve the lots of residents in the Kalinago region. He said he will ensure that Sandford and community leaders in Kalinago succeed in every sphere of regional life under his administration.
I want to congratulate Mr. Lorenzo Sanford, who has created history in the Territory by being one of the youngest men to be elected Kalinago Chief. We expect that he will bring fresh ideas and a new vigour to the Territory.

The prime minister made the assertion while presenting the 2019/2020 national budget to parliamentarians a few days ago. Lucky enough, Sandford was also present at the occasion and received a standing ovation from Parliament members following his victory at the elections. Skerrit said that as a young man of 47 years himself, he will ensure the 22-year-old Sandford has all he needs to succeed as the youngest Kalinago leader.
Skerrit said he plans to empower the new Kalinago chief to improve quality of life as well as increase economic opportunities for people in the Kalinago Territory. He highlighted major projects that have been billed for execution in Kalinago in the new national budget.
“The projects to be implemented in the Kalinago Territory in the 2019/20 financial year will include: The continuation of the small business development fund which will provide grants to new and existing small businesses, the establishment of an agricultural centre to provide the farmers and households with seedlings and other planting materials, the development of the craft industry through training, marketing and financial support to those engaged in its production,” Skerrit announced.
Furthermore, the prime minister noted that 100 resilient climate homes and new community roads will be constructed in Kalinago to improve the lives of the Indigenous people.
