Police Arrest 31 People for Breach of Curfew Order, Warn Boat Owners
Dominica police have arrested 31 people who breached the curfew order instituted by the government to curtail the spread of COVID-19 in Dominica. This was revealed by Deputy Police Chief, Lincoln Corbette, during a media chat recently.
He declared that 15 of the arrested persons are from Portsmouth, people who held a public celebration on a public road. He added that 14 of the arrested individuals pleaded guilty in court and were fined $500 to be paid immediately to avoid being jailed.
“These people were in breach of the curfew order by failing to adhere to the conditions stipulated therein,” Corbette stated. “Anyone found to be in a public place without being exempted will be arrested and prosecuted.”
The deputy police chief also stated that police officials will continue to patrol lands and seas to arrest people breaching the curfew order without due authorization. The sea patrol will also be arrest boat owners who enter Dominica illegally during this coronavirus lockdown.
He urged the general public to be on the lookout for boats entering the island illegally, saying this flagrant disregard for lockdown could endanger public health and put the lives of residents in grave jeopardy.
“In a previous broadcast, I issued a stern warning to boat captains, boat owners, crew members and people who are involved in entering the state illegally,” Corbette stated. “I reiterate that you have to desist from this practice. We will use every legal means to ensure and enforce compliance to this order; we will stop you by any means necessary.”
