Dominican Police Chief Daniel Carbon has expressed worries over the rising cases of robberies and other gun-related crimes in the country. He said police authorities are working hard to reduce the incidence of gun violence in the country and begged members of the public for their cooperation in stemming the tide.
Carbon said the country has witnessed 10 murders this year, compared to 10 murder cases in 2019 and 11 murder incidents in 2018. These murders were carried out with guns and the authorities are working round the clock to mop up illegal guns on the island. The police chief also worries about sexual assaults and robberies, saying the authorities recorded 86 robberies in 2019 and 69 in 2018.
He revealed that 2018 had the lowest rate of crimes in 20 years, and only saw 926 offences; while 2019 witnessed 870 punishable crimes.
He also urged the general public to report suspicious activities to the police so that the authorities can investigate them. He said the police cannot effectively protect lives and property or solve crimes without the due involvement of the public. He equally urged youths to eschew violence and settle personal differences amicably with dialogue instead of resorting to gun violence.
