An unnamed police officer has met bail conditions after being arraigned for sexual offences. The conditions for his bail were that –
- He must submit his passport
- Stay out of further trouble with the law
- Keep his distance from the complainant and witnesses
The police officer met the conditions and secured bail. He was charged with sexually molesting the complainan contrary to the Dominica Sexual Offences Act.
Since the case is still ongoing, the media is prohibited from publishing the identity of the accused and that of the complainant till the case is determined and sentence awarded.
Sexual offences are rife in Dominica and several pressure groups and government agencies have been working to bring the situation to a complete halt. Some groups even want the government to create the Sex Offenders Register like is done in other countries such that offenders can be labelled for life and anybody can publicly see their offences and the punishments awarded.
A particular group said sexual offences are not limited to strangers; it also happens in the workplace and family members are known to commit incest and the matter swept under the carpet because of the stigma associated with being raped or sexually molested.
