Portsmouth Hospital to be Upgraded & Community Centre Completed This Month

The parliamentary representative for Portsmouth Constituency, Ian Douglas, said the Reginald Fitzegerald Armour Hospital will undergo planned upgrade and expansions. Also known as Portsmouth Hospital, the Reginald Fitzegerald Armour Hospital will be expanded for better services to complement the planned construction of more hotels in the area, Douglas said.

“We are going to expand and upgrade the Reginald Fitzgerald Armour Hospital which is the Portsmouth Hospital,” he told parliament. “We are going to upgrade and we are going to expand it because we have the hotels coming, Madam Speaker.”

The parliamentarian further accused the opposition of celebrating every misfortune that befalls the country. He, however, said the DLP administration will continue to grow in strength until Dominica achieves the highest national growth in the region.

“Erika they celebrated, after Maria they celebrated…,” Douglas remarked. “The University left, they went down to Portsmouth to celebrate.”

Meanwhile, the parliamentary representative for the St. Joseph Constituency, Kelver Darroux, announced in parliament that the Community and Emergency Centre under construction in Layou will be completed this August.

The construction of the Community Centre was awarded in June 2017 for $5.8 million and the Emergency Centre awarded for $1.65 million. Offshore Civil and Marine Incorporated won both contracts and agreed for their completion in 110 days.

“I am very pleased that this project is nearing completion and the residents of Layou and the surrounding communities will seek to benefit for the first Community and Emergency Centre,” Darroux said. “This project will be completed in August of this year allowing the residents of Layou to have the opportunity to have a facility, not just to host other activities.”

The River Defense project around Hillsborough Bridge, the Providence road rehabilitation project in Roseau Valley, and the ongoing highway rehabilitation work in St. Joseph all cost $7.45 million, Darroux revealed. According to him, over $3 million has been spent to repair the Carholm road to make it standard for resident users.
