The American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) embarked on a significant chapter with its inaugural White Coat Ceremony on August 13, 2023, at the newly established Picard Portsmouth campus in Dominica. The event signified the initiation of 10 students into the realm of medicine, as they undertook the Oath to Compassionate Patient Care amidst distinguished guests, including faculty, government officials, friends, and family.
President of ACSOM, Carey James, highlighted the institution’s unique role as a private nonprofit organization with a strong social commitment. He emphasized ACSOM’s dedication to elevating healthcare and its strategic partnership with the Dominican government, a collaboration that is reshaping healthcare standards.
Renowned speaker Dr. Jeff Wong, a professor of Medicine at Pennsylvania State University, inspired students through the acronym “RESPECT,” encapsulating the virtues of a professional physician – Respect, Equanimity, Sincerity, Perseverance, Excellence, Compassion, and Trust.
The ceremony set the stage for ACSOM’s academic journey, commencing on Monday with a diverse group of students, including the first Dominican scholar, Mr. Brent Remy. Casey James, ACSOM’s President, conveyed the institution’s unwavering commitment to providing a remarkable medical education and expressed gratitude to the Dominican government for its integral support.
Dr. Ramin Ahmadi, M.D., Dean of ACSOM, highlighted the institution’s collaborative spirit and innovative curriculum, designed for student-centered learning and pioneering medical practices. He urged students to honor the legacy of healers and pioneers while expanding the horizons of medical knowledge and compassionate care.
The ACSOM President, along with faculty and attendees, conveyed their excitement for the transformative impact ACSOM is set to make on healthcare, not only locally but also on a broader scale.
