His Excellency Charles Angelo Savarin, President of the Commonwealth of Dominica will head Dominica’s delegation to the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, which begins on September 20th, 2022.
As Head of Delegation, President Savarin is schedule to deliver Dominica’s statement during the afternoon session of the high-level debate on Wednesday 21st September.
This year’s theme is “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges.”
The theme stems from the recognition that the world is at a critical juncture in the history of the United Nations due to complex and interconnected crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, humanitarian challenges of unprecedented nature, a tipping point in climate change as well as growing concerns about threats to the global economy.
Guided by the theme, His Excellency’s address will cover the impact of the climate crisis on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Dominica’s progress towards the achievement of climate resilience and Agenda 2030, notwithstanding its many inherent challenges. His Excellency will speak to Dominica’s continued commitment to the preservation of international peace and security and impress upon the global community the need to collectively tackle issues such as NCD and sustained food security in the interest of all people.
The President will be accompanied by his wife and ADC. Other members of the delegation are Honourable Dr. Kenneth Darroux, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Intemational Business and Diaspora Relations, Mrs. Barbara Dailey, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and Diaspora Relations, Mr. Kelver Darroux, Deputy Permanent Representative at Dominica’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and Foreign Service Officer, Ms. Kamila Bell.
The General Debate of the UNGA is the annual meeting of Heads of State and Government of the 193 UN Member States, during a high-level week at the beginning of every General Assembly session. It is usually the first debate of the session, and the highlight of the UN year. END
