President Nomination Process Hits Impasse: Dominican Leaders Fail to Agree on a Candidate

In a recent turn of events in Dominica’s political landscape, the nomination of the next President has sparked controversy between Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Opposition Leader Jesmar Paul-Victor.

The government’s nomination of Sylvanie Burton, currently serving as the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment and Kalinago Upliftment, has been met with disagreement from the Opposition Leader.

The discord became public knowledge during a news conference held on August 30, 2023, following a constitutional mandate that required the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader to reach a consensus on a joint nominee for the presidency.

Despite the initial consultations, it became evident that Prime Minister Skerrit and Opposition Leader Paul-Victor could not see eye to eye on the nomination of Sylvanie Burton as the next President of Dominica.

The Prime Minister expressed his deep disappointment in this disagreement, particularly given the historic significance of the opportunity.

Sylvanie Burton, a Dominican native, boasts an impressive resume, having served as a permanent secretary in various ministries since 2014. Her extensive experience includes roles in the Ministries of Community Development, Foreign Affairs, Trade, Youth and Social Services, and her current position in the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment, and Constituency Empowerment.

Burton’s commitment to the development of Dominica is undeniable, especially in the Kalinago Territory, where she has been actively involved in numerous projects for the past four decades.

Her qualifications and dedication to her homeland have positioned her as a strong contender for the presidential role.

The Leader of the Opposition, however, remained unconvinced by Burton’s credentials, leading to the breakdown in negotiations.

Consequently, the path forward involves a 14-day period during which nominations for the presidency will be accepted from various members of the House of Assembly. This process will culminate in a parliamentary vote, conducted by secret ballot, to determine the nation’s next President.

The controversy surrounding this nomination process underscores the significance of selecting a candidate who will effectively serve Dominica’s interests.

As the nation awaits the outcome of the impending presidential election, it is a stark reminder of the complexities and nuances inherent in the democratic systems of governance.
