President Savarin Tells the United Nations That Planet Earth Is On Fire
President Charles Savarin told the 74th General Assembly of the United States that our world is on fire and everything must be done fast to quench the inferno. He told world leaders at the conference that mounting natural disasters have set the Earth on fire, and urgent action is needed to arrest the situation before it gets out of hand.
Savarin cited the instances of forest fires in Brazil, the United States, Europe and the Far East. He mentioned the frequent hurricanes hitting the parts of the United States, the entire Dominica, Haiti, the Bahamas and several flooding around the world.
“When fire strikes your neighborhood, you do not hold a meeting to determine if your neighbours are insured,” Savarin told the assembly. “You call out the fire brigade. And this is what we need now, urgent action. Our planet is on fire and we must take immediate steps to quell it.”
While thanking the international community for their assistance when Hurricane Maria hit Dominica in 2017, the Dominican president referenced the recent impacts of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and how it has destroyed lives and property. He tasked the world leaders present that if Hurricanes Irma and Maria would not convince them to the realities of global warming, then they might has well see that Hurricane Dorian did to the Bahamas.
Savarin linked climate change and resultant hurricanes to homelessness, starvation, mental anguish, spike in refugees, and general loss of lives and property. “Soon, the phenomenon of climate refugees will also be a new norm,” he warned. However, he mentioned Dominica’s lofty goal of becoming the first climate resilient country in the world and the nation has been working assiduously towards that.
The president revealed that Dominica will become the first country in the world to be fully climate-change compliant, and that every infrastructure is being put into place to make this a reality. He noted that more still needs to be done, and that everything will soon fall into place to make Dominica a country of envy to others even as everyone endeavors in individual and corporate capacities to save our world.
