Prior to Reopening Borders, Dominicans Urged to Take Advantage of Staycations
The government is urging Dominicans to take advantage of staycations before the national borders are finally reopened on August 7. This move will not only afford island citizens the opportunity to enjoy great deals at local hotels and resorts – before the arrival of foreigners, it will also serve to boost the tourism sector which the COVID-19 pandemic has rendered redundant.
Director of Tourism and CEO of Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), Collin Piper, said the plan to open up staycations to Dominicans first was taken with the support of Tourism Minister Denise Charles, and the Executive Director of the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DHTA) Kevin Francis. He added that 11 hotels and three tour operators in the country have indicated their willingness to offer great deals to people during this time.
The theme for this year’s staycation is “Experience Dominica”.
Tourism Minister Denise Charles said the reopening the country’s borders with staycations will enable Dominicans to enjoy the unique services of resorts and hotels following the long period of coronavirus lockdown, and that property owners will have enough time to implement health protocols to safeguard the wellbeing of customers.
We will start our reopening with staycations. We want to see as many people as possible patronize our local resorts and hotels. So you can strongly recommend to your friends and families here and abroad….they will see many reasons to visit Dominica once we finally reopen to all visitors.

The DHTA, the Environmental Health Department, and the Quality Assurance Unit of the DDA are collaborating with property owners to ensure that accommodation is available for all visitors during and after the Experience Dominica 2020 Staycation. Charles said this will cover guest arrival, front desk and room service, amenities (swimming pools, gyms, spas, and conference rooms), food and beverage, and management of general operations among others.
