The Dominica Public Service Commission (PSC) has appointed 40 teachers and five school principals, with more people to be employed soon. The appointment was announced by the Minister for Public Service Reform, Gretta Roberts, who stated that up to 130 public officers are billed to be elected into permanent positions of public employment.
This appointment was confirmed by the General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang, who noted that the recent appointment of 40 teachers and five principals is not enough given the large number of unemployed people in the country, and the large number of people in temporary positions.
Before this time, DPSU had been pressuring the government to give permanent employment to the host of workers who had spent up to 10 years in temporary positions. He said it is unfair for them to remain in temporary positions for over a decade when their positions should have been assured as permanent government workers.
Letang disclosed that the Chief Personnel Officer, Careen Prevost, has assured him that the PSC is currently considering some recommendations of people who might be employed or appointed against by the government.
The DPSU general secretary went further to blame Dominicans for how easily they relax from mounting pressures on the government over issues of national importance. He said people make noise when elections are near, but as soon as it is over they relent and return to the status quo.
“There is an election, we make noise for electoral reform and as soon as elections are over, people go quiet and nothing is done until the next election,” Letang remarked. “If we think that these issues are important, whether we have elections or not, we should be pursuing those matters all throughout the years until we get the required results.”
