The reconstruction of the Goodwill Secondary School (GSS) in Dominica is progressing swiftly, with officials expressing optimism about completing the project ahead of schedule. During a recent site visit, Hon. Octavia Alfred of the Ministry of Education highlighted the rapid advancement of the construction, which is part of a broader initiative under the China Aid Project aimed at rebuilding schools damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017.
The new GSS is set to be a state-of-the-art facility, designated as a Center of Excellence for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). This designation underscores the school’s focus on specialized programs including Food Preparation, Electricity and Electrical Installations, Garment Production, and more. The school will also feature a technical wing, an administrative area, and classrooms built to support a comprehensive educational experience with modern science labs, a library, and an auditorium.
Additional facilities at GSS will cater to the holistic needs of students, including counseling and pastoral care rooms, a sickbay, and a multipurpose hardcourt, ensuring that both academic and extracurricular needs are met. Such amenities are designed to foster an environment conducive to learning and personal development.
The construction is being handled by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which began by demolishing the previous storm-damaged structures. With the foundation nearly complete and work on the technical and administrative sections underway, the project is moving at a promising pace.
Despite the potential for weather-related delays typical between June and November, Minister Alfred remains hopeful that the favorable progress will lead to an early completion. This development not only symbolizes a significant step forward in Dominica’s recovery from Hurricane Maria but also marks a critical investment in the future of the nation’s youth. The collaboration between the Government of Dominica and the People’s Republic of China on this project highlights a significant international partnership aimed at enhancing educational infrastructure in the region.
